DIY Pressed Glitter

I originally posted this in 2016, but I am bringing it back so you can try it yourself! Luckily now its easy to get mixing medium, I had to special order it for this blog post!

Step 1: Gather the Ingredients and Tools

  • Glitter of your choice
  • Mixing medium (you can use cosmetic-grade glitter glue or a mixing medium specifically designed for pressed glitters)
  • Small mixing bowl or palette
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Empty compact or pan
  • Pressing tools (such as a pressing ribbon or a coin)

Step 2: Prepare the Glitter

  1. Start by choosing the glitter color(s) you want to use and pour it into the small mixing bowl or palette.
  2. If necessary, break down any larger glitter particles by gently crushing them with a spoon or spatula.

Step 3: Mix the Glitter with the Mixing Medium

  1. Add a small amount of the mixing medium to the glitter. Start with a few drops or a small dollop, and you can adjust the amount as needed.
  2. Using the spoon or spatula, mix the glitter and mixing medium together thoroughly until you achieve a smooth and well-combined mixture. Make sure all the glitter is coated with the mixing medium.

Step 4: Transfer the Mixture to the Compact or Pan

  1. Take the empty compact or pan and carefully transfer the glitter mixture into it. You can use the spoon or spatula to scrape every bit of the mixture into the compact.
  2. Use the back of the spoon or a pressing tool to press the mixture firmly into the pan. Apply even pressure to ensure that the glitter is compact and sticks together.

Step 5: Press the Glitter

  1. Place the ribbon or a clean coin on top of the pressed glitter mixture in the compact.
  2. Apply pressure by pressing down firmly on the ribbon or coin. This step helps to compress the glitter and remove any excess mixing medium.
  3. Remove the ribbon or coin and gently smooth out the surface of the pressed glitter with the back of the spoon or pressing tool.

Step 6: Let it Dry

  1. Leave the compact open and allow the pressed glitter mixture to dry completely. This may take a few hours or overnight, depending on the type and amount of mixing medium used.
  2. Once dry, your homemade pressed glitter is ready to use! You can use it for various makeup looks by applying it with a suitable brush or your fingertips.

Remember to keep your pressed glitter in a cool and dry place to maintain its quality. Enjoy creating beautiful sparkly looks with your homemade creation!
